Google Removes ‘Diversity’ and ‘Equity’ Mentions from AI Research Team’s Webpage
Google has quietly updated the webpage for its Responsible AI and Human Centered Technology (RAI-HCT) team, which focuses on research into AI safety, fairness, and explainability. The update removes mentions of “diversity” and “equity” from the page.
A previous version of the webpage included terms like “marginalized communities,” “diverse,” “underrepresented groups,” and “equity” to describe the team's work. However, these words have now been removed or replaced with more general terms like “all,” “varied,” and “numerous” instead of “diverse.”
Google has not yet responded to a request for comment.
Part of a Broader DEI Rollback
The changes were first noticed by The Midas Project, a watchdog group monitoring tech industry policies. This comes shortly after Google removed similar language from its Startups Founders Fund grant website.
In early February, Google announced that it would eliminate diversity hiring targets and review its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs.
Big Tech Shifts Away from DEI Initiatives
Google is among several major tech companies rolling back DEI programs following increased scrutiny from the Trump administration, which has labeled such initiatives “illegal.”
Amazon and Meta have scaled back their DEI commitments in recent months.
OpenAI recently removed mentions of diversity and inclusion from its hiring webpage.
Apple, however, has pushed back against shareholder proposals to end its DEI programs.
Many of these companies, including Google, hold contracts with U.S. federal agencies, which could be influencing their policy shifts.
